The staff at TCS is a group of qualified and dedicated Christian teachers who are deeply committed to the children entrusted in their care. We model Christian behaviour in the way we treat our students, their parents and each other, seeking always to bring glory to God through our words and deeds.
Mrs. Lorraine Groot
BA, BEd, CSTC, OCT
I first taught at Timothy Christian School in 1983. Besides teaching Senior Kindergarten, over my 25 years at TCS I have taught Junior Kindergarten, Grades 2, 3, 4 and Resource. I enjoy sharing my passion for learning with my students especially in the areas of outdoor education, language arts, and art. Helping students learn about how to serve and love God, others, and themselves are central to my daily work. My four children and husband are graduates of Timothy!
Ms Sandy Ayala
BA(Hon.), ECE, BEd
I became an Early childhood educator in 2005, graduated from York 2009 and Trent University 2010 and have worked in Kindergarten classrooms ever since. Working in the children’s ministry and Sunday School Director in my church has also been a blessing as I get the chance to serve in His Kingdom. I had the opportunity to volunteer, do placement and supply as a teacher at Timothy Christian School and I thank God for the opportunity to be part of TCS. I enjoy reading, singing, travelling, and soccer is my favourite sport. I play the mandolin and enjoy listening to music as well.
Ms Vanessa Chiang
BSc, Griffith University – M. Teach., OCT, CSTC
After completing a B.Sc. at Redeemer University College, I completed my Masters in Teaching, with a focus on student behavior, at Griffith University in Australia. After a moment of teaching year four in the UK, I began my journey at TCS by covering a maternity leave in the grade 1/2 class back in 2008. I has been there ever since. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the guitar and ukulele as well as dabbling in paints and photography.
Ms Katarina Basiw
Redeemer University College, BA, BEd, OCT
This is my first year teaching at TCS and my second year teaching. I graduated from Redeemer University College with a BA in History and my Bachelor of Education. Last year I taught Grade 4/5 at London Christian Elementary where I enjoyed directing and co-directing two plays. I am thrilled to be teaching the 1/2 class this year with Vanessa and even more excited to be teaching math and art!
When I'm not teaching I like to read, sing and play guitar poorly for my family to listen to and watch extremely dramatic television shows. You can often find me on weekends sitting in a Starbucks enjoying a grande pumpkin spice latte with family and friends.
Mrs. Carla Perera (on leave)
· University of Toronto, Trent University – BA(Hon.), BEd, OCT
I graduated from the University of Toronto with a double major in History and English. Immediately following this, I attended Trent University and graduated with a Bachelor in Education for the Intermediate and Senior Divisions. After many years of volunteering at schools and working outside of education, in 2013 I was hired by TCS as an education assistant in Ms. Chiang’s grade 1. I was excited to finally be in a classroom but new to the primary teaching division. In short, I fell in love with teaching all over again and decided to get my Primary Division Certification. Since then, I’ve taught Kindergarten and currently I’m teaching Grade 1/2. I also have additional qualifications in Special Education and English as a Second Language. Outside of school, my husband, Keith, and I enjoy spoiling our sweet dog Jojo.
Mr. Joshua Robinson
York University – BA(Hon.), OCT
I am a grateful husband, proud father, and passionate worshipper of God. After working part-time at both TCS and Grace Fellowship Church for several years, I joined TCS full time in 2015. Since then, I have in various ways taught every grade except kindergarten and 1st. As the current grade 3 teacher, I enjoy integrating drama, dance, and music into all areas of curriculum. I also take every opportunity to engage in out-of-the-classroom learning adventures. I believe in Christian education because God is the architect and builder of all things, including our salvation. I count it a privilege to daily point young souls to their creator and saviour!
Mrs. Margo Hudson
York University, Nipissing University College – BA(Hon.), BEd OCT
This school year (2017-18) marks the 40th year that I have been part of the Timothy Christian School community—first as a student, then as a volunteer, and finally as a teacher and parent. After graduating from TCS in 1979, I attended Toronto District Christian High School. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in French at York University then received my Bachelor of Education at Nipissing University. Since then, I have taken courses in French, Primary Education, Curriculum, and the Philosophy of Christian Education, as well as many workshops. Most recently, I have enjoyed and appreciated delving into the Responsive Classroom.
I love watching and helping children grow and mature in their learning and their faith. Over the years, I have spent significant time teaching grades 2, 3, and 4, as well as teaching French as a Second Language to Grades 5 through 8. Currently I am loving spending most of my time with Grade 4 and the Grade 7/8 French class. I also love camping, hiking, playing piano and spending time in Bible study and prayer.
Mrs. Leanne Porter
Brock University, McGill University - BA, Music Specialist, OCT
I presently teach Grade 4, as well as Band and French part time at TCS.
I graduated from Brock University with my BA in Music and attended McGill University where I received my diploma in Education. I have also taken additional qualification in Junior Basic and Instrumental Music part 1.
I have been teaching a variety of subjects and age groups on a part time basis at TCS for the past 11 years. My teaching career began in vocal music and has included time at home raising my family, and working as a presenter with Scientists in School. I love to lead worship for kids both at TCS and my local Rexdale church. I recently had the opportunity to use these skills on a short term mission trip to Spain. I am passionate about proclaiming the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord and seeing students become life-long worshipers.
Ms Janice Miedema
· University of Guelph, Redeemer University College – BCEd, BA CSTC, OCT
I graduated from the University of Guelph with an Honours BA in Sociology. After working a few years for Toronto Parks and Recreation, I earned my Education degree from Redeemer University College. Since then, I has taught Grades 4, 5, and 6. I consider it a joy to watch children grow in their knowledge of God and of His creation. It is a blessing to have been part of the TCS community since childhood, and it’s my privilege to have served as a teacher at TCS since 2001. I love to learn; I have recently incorporated student-based assessment, PBL, and Responsive Classroom into my teaching practice. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and camping and canoeing in Ontario’s beautiful parks.
Mrs. Amy Vander Wier

I graduated from Redeemer University College with a B.A. B.Ed. in Religion/Theology with a Minor in PhysEd. I also have ESL part 1. I have been an active teacher for the past eight years. This includes working as a substitute teacher and most recently, working part time at TCS. My career has allowed me to experience and travel throughout Canada; starting in British Columbia, moving to Prince Edward Island, up north to the Yukon and finally back home to Rexdale, Ontario. I am thrilled to be teaching grade 6 part time at my alma mater, Timothy Christian School.
Ms Soojin Choi
York University – BA, BEd, OCT
2017 was my first year teaching at TCS, and it has been great! My first year was special because I got to teach all the grades in the school except for Grade 5. (It took me a while to memorize everyone's names...but I have now mastered them! Yay!)
I graduated from York University with a degree in Psychology and Education, and a specialty in Intermediate Mathematics. I have very fond memories from my own childhood education. I would love all of my student to have the same experience throughout their time as a TCS member.
When I’m not teaching, I love to eat, stay active, and go bowling with my friends and family. I also play softball every summer in my church league. My very favourite thing to do is to visit my home country in Korea to spend time with my family and friends.
Mrs. Barbara Ubbens
University of Toronto, Redeemer University College – Forestry BScF, BCEd, CSTC, OTC
Most comfortable with my hands deep into paint and pastel or picking up sticks, leaves, cones and stones I love to enjoy God's creation and revel in the creative process. I enjoy children - their free expression, their whimsy and spontaneity. Educated as a forest engineer my specialty is the natural environment with study in mathematics and science. Watching trees grow and exploring or running along trails is a wonderful way to spend a day. Later I attended Redeemer University for my teaching degree. I have been at Timothy Christian first as a parent then 21 years ago as teacher of ESL then 7&8. I know it is here God prepared a place for me. I have expanded my education with Art and deeply love opening the wonder of creativity with young people. My most comfortable moments are early morning in a kayak with a camera before my face in awe as God paints the day.
Mrs. Alice Velthuizen
Dordt College – BA, CSTC, OCT
During my twelve years at TCS I have been teaching Resource and ESL classes. I received my BA at Dordt, a small Christian college, in Iowa, and have since added classes at Redeemer, McMaster, OISE, and The Claremont School to attain specialties in Special Education, Teaching English as a Second Language, and Orton-Gillingham Certification (called Practical Linguistics). When not teaching, I’m dreaming of trips to visit our grown children and grandchildren who live in NYC, Chicago, or South Korea.

I graduated from Dordt College with a BA in Education and a minor in Special Education. I began my teaching career in Georgetown at the then Georgetown District Christian School (now Halton Hills Christian School). I also taught at Calvin Christian School (now Community Christian School) in Drayton. After 5 years of teaching I stayed home to raise our 4 children for 10 years. Over the years I have taken extra courses to get my OCT (Ontario College of Teachers) as well as my CSTC (Christian School Teachers Certificate) and then my CSPC (Christian School Principal Certification). I began teaching at TCS in 2002 and became principal in 2005. I enjoy meeting new families and getting to know all the families in our school. Outside of school, my husband, Wilbert and I enjoy taking walks and being involved in our church. I also enjoy spending time with my adult children, when they come home on Sundays, playing board games and cards. We have a cat, Jellybean, who has been a part of our family for over 10 years.
Mrs. Sheila Reid
I have been working in office administration ever since graduating university, with a 15 year hiatus to stay at home with our three children, all of whom graduated from Timothy Christian School. I, too am a graduate! It has been a pleasure to work here at TCS in the office for the last 8 years, with such a wonderful staff and community and if not employed here, you might find me on tour with the musical, Les Miserables!
